The redesigned Mazda2 subcompact has been unveiled overseas, showcasing updated styling in line with other recent Mazda products and boasting improved fuel economy.
The 2016 Mazda2 will be outfitted with the SkyActiv technology suite that helps reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The previous generation returned 30 mpg overall in our tests, and we expect this number will climb higher. Other vehicles with SkyActiv powertrains, such as the Mazda3, 6 and CX-5, have returned impressive fuel economy as well as good performance in our tests. No announcement has been made on the specific engine coming to the U.S. market yet. So far only the hatchback body style has been shown. Other markets also offer a sedan version of this car.
The next-generation Mazda2 will include the Mazda Connect infotainment system that integrates a smart phone with a variety of web applications like Aha radio. The car will also offer advanced safety technologies, including lane-departure and forward-collision warning, as well as radar cruise control and automatic high beams.
The previous Mazda2 had nimble handling making it fun to drive—a common trait among Mazdas. We hope the redesign addresses the road noise, front seat comfort, and choppy ride we experienced with the current model.
The new Mazda2 will roll out to global markets beginning in fall. We expect to see it make an appearance in the U.S. auto show circuit in the coming months, and once available, we will buy one to put through our battery of tests.
