3Net forms studio to develop more 3D, 4K content

Is the lack of 3D programming holding back 3D adoption? Apparently 3D network 3net thinks so: It's launching a new studio to develop and distribute new 3D content, including some in the higher 4K "ultra HD" resolution.

Called 3net Studios, the new TV-program production and distribution facility will be a division of 3net, which is a joint venture from Sony, Discovery, and IMAX. The studio's mission will be to produce high-quality, native 3D content.

The company says it will adopt a production strategy called TotalD, in which select projects will be completed in a variety of formats—including native 4K 3D, 4K 2D, 2K 3D, and both 3D and 2D HD—that can serve current and future platforms ranging from mobile devices to 4K TVs.

3net, along with ESPN 3D, is one of the few full-time 3D channels available. Earlier this summer, as we reported, DirecTV decided to move its 24/7 n3D channel, developed in partnership with Panasonic, to part-time status.

3net says that it will offer more specific details on the projects that fall under the 3D Studios banner in coming weeks. The 3net channel was announced in 2010, and launched in early in 2011.
