CES 2013: The new Switch 3-Way LED emits a familiar glow

As acronyms go, OLED, or organic light-emitting diode, may not roll off the tongue but it is all the talk at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The Consumer Reports tech experts at CES say this technology is radically changing TVs. OLEDs will someday alter lighting too, but until then LEDs are the latest in lightbulbs, with a three-way LED from Switch Lighting also making news at CES.

The Switch 3-Way was named one of the best innovations at CES. Switch claims it's the first LED to provide three levels of light, replacing a 25/50/75-watt incandescent while using a fraction of the electricity. Since this LED won't be in stores or sold online until April, we haven't gotten it in our labs yet. Switch says the 3-Way gives off the familiar glow, brightness, and light distribution of an incandescent, yet is designed to last 25,000 hours. The cost? About $60, maybe less.

Some of the LEDs we have tested earned near-perfect scores. For more on energy-saving lightbulbs, take a look at our Ratings of LEDs and CFLs. For more news from the Consumer Electronics Show, check our full coverage.
