Subaru recalls nearly 634,000 Forester, Legacy, Outback, Tribeca models due to fire risk

Subaru is recalling 2010 and 2011 Legacy and Outbacks, 2009-2012 Foresters and 2006-2012 Tribecas due to an electrical issue in a lighting system that could cause a fire.

Subaru says up to about 54,000 of the 633,842 recalled vehicles may be equipped with accessory puddle lights that brighten the area under the door. The lights can short out if exposed to moisture. Over time, the short circuit may generate enough heat to melt the plastic and cause smoke or a fire.

Subaru will notify owners beginning in February to bring their recalled vehicles to dealerships for a free repair. Dealers will install an additional fused harness as a remedy.

Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783 for more information or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236, or go to safercar.gov.
