CES 2013: LG has fewer plasmas, no more CCFL LCD TVs

While a lot of the focus in LG's booth at CES next week will be on Ultra HD and OLED TVs, the company will likely sell more of its mainstream plasma and LCD TVs, which are refreshed for 2013.

Heading into the show, we learned that LG will offer just three plasma series—five models in all—in its new lineup, while the main news for its more basic LCD sets (those without 3D or Internet capability) is that there won't be any models that use fluorescent (CCFL) backlights as the company moves to an all-LED backlit LCD lineup.

We've previously covered LG's new smart TVs, including 3D models. Here's the rest of LG's 2013 TV lineup:

Plasma TV lineup

Although plasma TVs still offer a lot of bang for the buck in the larger screen sizes, LG is scaling back its plasma assortment in 2013 with just five models spread across three series. The PN4500 series, available in the 42- and 50-Inch screen sizes, are basic entry-level sets with 720p resolution.

Stepping up to the PN6500 series, offered in 50- and 60-inch screen sizes, gets you 1080p resolution plus the company's new thin-bezel "Hair Line" design.

The flagship PH6700-series plasma set, only available in a 60-inch screen size, includes all the bells and whistles, including 1080p resolution, active 3D technology, and LG's smart TV platform. Like other LG smart TVs this model has a dual-core processor, and comes with the new Magic Remote control with voice-command capability.

Basic LCD TV lineup

For those not interested in smart TV or 3D, there are five new LCD TV series in screen sizes ranging from 22 to 60 inches. The smallest sets are in the LN4500 series, which includes 22- and 24-inch models. These are 720p 1080p 60Hz models with edge LED backlights.

Just above them are the LN4510-series sets, offered in 24- and 29-inch screen sizes. Both are 720p 60Hz sets with edge LED backlights. A larger similarly featured model (except for a direct-LED backlight) 32-inch model can be found in the LN540B series.

Stepping up to the LN5300 series—in 32-, 39-, and 42-inch screen sizes—get you 1080p resolution, although with a 60Hz refresh rate.

The top-of-the-line basic series (without the 3D or smart TV features) is the LN5400, available in 42, 47, 50, 55 and 60-inch screen sizes. In addition to 1080p resolution, these sets have a 120Hz refresh rate.

As with LG's smart TVs, we're hoping to get pricing for these models at the company's press conference at CES next week. Keep checking back with our blog for all our CES updates.
