Q. Avocados are supposedly good for you. Can I assume that avocado oil is likewise healthful?—Joseph Ally, Shingle Springs, CA
A. Avocado oil is a fine choice for a healthful vegetable oil (it’s high in monounsaturated fats), but it’s probably not readily available in most supermarkets. In fact, most liquid vegetable oils are healthy choices, but some—primarily olive and canola—are healthier than others.
Check our report on the extra-virgin olive oils, in which we found that some oils don't make the grade. And find out how to save at the supermarket on oils and other food items.
