Reports of 46 fires that caused $2.15 million in property damage have led China-based Gree Electric Appliances to recall 2.25 million dehumidifiers it manufactured under 12 different brand names, including Frigidaire, SoleusAir, Danby, and others. The recall comes two months after the manufacturer issued a stop-sale notice for some of the models on today’s recall list.
The recall involves 20-, 25-, 30-, 40-, 45-, 50-, 65- and 70-pint dehumidifiers with brand names Danby (6 models), DeLonghi (3 models), Fedders (2 models), Fellini (2 models), Frigidaire (13 models), Gree (19 models), Kenmore (4 models), Norpole (1 model), Premiere (6 models), Seabreeze (2 models), SoleusAir (28 models) and SuperClima (3 models). All of the recalled model numbers and date codes are listed on the recall notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The affected dehumidifiers range in price from $110 to $400 and were sold at AAFES, HH Gregg, Home Depot, Kmart, Lowe’s, Menards, Mills Fleet Farm, Sam’s Club, Sears, and other stores nationwide and in Canada, and online at Amazon.com and Ebay.com, from January 2005 through August 2013.
In addition to the fire reports, the manufacturer received 120 reports of overheating and/or smoking. The CPSC recommends that owners of these models unplug them and contact Gree at (866) 853-2802 for a full refund.. You can enter the brand, model and date code on Gree’s website to determine whether your dehumidifier is on the recall list. If your dehumidifier has been recalled, Gree will ask for contact information to send a return kit and instructions.
In July, Consumer Reports removed three SoleusAir dehumidifiers from its Ratings after the manufacturer issued the stop-sale notice that preceded this recall. None of the models in the current recall are in our dehumidifier Ratings.
