Boxee TV, the new streaming media player that offers a cloud-based DVR service for subscribers, is now available. But you can only get it at Walmart stores, walmart.com, or directly from the Boxee.tv for the remainder of the holiday season.
Like other streaming-media players, the $99 Boxee TV provides access to several services, including Netflix and Vudu, that offer streaming movies and TV shows. Boxee TV also offers other apps and services, including videos from Vimeo andYouTube, music from Pandora and Spotify, plus WSJ Live, MLB.TV, and TED.
But Boxee TV also comes with both over-the-air and QAM tuners, so you'll be able to get free over-the-air programming as well as basic, unencrypted cable TV channels from the major networks, such as ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC, plus PBS, Univision, and others, all in high definition. Boxee TV has two tuners, so you can watch a program while another is being recorded.
Another unique feature is Boxee TV's "No Limits" DVR, which lets you upload an unlimited number of recordings to the cloud, where they can be accessed by other devices--a notebook computer, tablet, or Internet-connected TV, for example.
There will be a number of special launch and holiday promotions to support Boxee TV. The best, in our opinion, is that those who purchase a Boxee TV this year will get a lifetime discount on the No Limits DVR subscription, paying $10 per month instead of regular $15-per-month rate. Other offers include three free months for Netflix (both new and existing subscribers), one free month of Spotify, three free months of the DVR service in the eight markets where it's currently supported, and a $6 credit from Vudu for new subscribers.
