Q&A: Why don't compact fluorescent bulbs work with my ceiling fans?

Q: We've tried using compact fluorescent lightbulbs in our remote-controlled ceiling fans. The bulbs blink and burn out within minutes. Is there a special type of bulb needed?—Helen Dula Puyallup, WA

A: Have an electrician check out the installation, and review the instruction manual or manufacturer website to find out whether you need to use particular types of CFLs or LEDs. Or consider installing halogen bulbs; many are about 30 percent more efficient than incandescent bulbs.
